Circles

I like to use themes for the week when I am introducing projects to my kids. Some of the concepts are new and some are introduced for reinforcement. I also try to use projects that can be adapted to different ages.

This week we worked on circles.

Monday - We started with introducing the shape by gluing cut out circles on to construction paper. Since my son is younger, it gave him an introduction to the shape. My daughter is already familiar with basic shapes, so I made it more interesting for her by helping her to make the circles into other objects (flowers, snowman, etc.). I also used this project to talk about different colors and sorting (put all of the blue circles together, where are all of the small circles?) with my son. For the second part of the project, we used empty yogurt containers as stamps to make circles. Both of those options could be a project for opposites if you use big and small circles.

Tuesday - We used scrapbook templates to trace circles in various sizes. Again, this was a simplistic project to reinforce the concept of "circle" to my son and we made the circles into pictures for my daughter. One of the pictures that I helped my daughter to make was a caterpillar. When she was done with this project, it was a nice transition into reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This project would also be a nice way to talk about different colors.

Wednesday - This project was my daughter's favorite for the week. I used printouts of apple trees and we traced the shapes and glued pom-pom balls on the trees for apples. The printout can be found at www.kidzone.ws/prek_wrksht/shapes-circles1.htm

Thursday - This was a really busy day for us, so we went outside and played with bubbles. I know it isn't very creative, but we talked about the shape while we were playing.

Friday - We had a scavenger hunt/race around the living room to see who could find the most circles.

Welcome

Hi -

Welcome to my new blog. I hope you find it interesting and helpful. I have two wonderful children and I try to find new things to keep them entertained. Along the way, I also hope to add to their education (in a fun way).
